Alan Shapiro, MD

Alan Shapiro, MD, is the co-founder and Chief Strategy Officer of Terra Firma National. He is also the co-founder and Medical Director of Terra Firma's Flagship program in the South Bronx. Dr. Shapiro is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Senior Medical Director of the Bronx Health Collective, a federally qualified health center of Montefiore Medical Center. Additionally, he served on the American Academy of Pediatrics’ (AAP) inaugural Executive Committee of the Council on Immigrant Child and Family Health. Dr. Shapiro has also been an advocate for immigrant children and families throughout his career - whether directly in his pediatric practice or through work with the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and human rights organizations. He is the co-author of the AAP’s Policy Statement, The Detention of Immigrant Children and co-author of Terra Firma: Medical-Legal Care for Unaccompanied Immigrant Garifuna Children, Harvard Journal of African American Public Policy (2015). Most recently, he was the co-author of a New England Journal of Medicine article, When Undoing Is Not Enough — Repairing Harms Inflicted on Immigrant Children (2021). He received his BS in psychology from Emory University and is a graduate of State University of NY Health Sciences Center at Brooklyn and completed his residency in Pediatrics from Montefiore Medical Center’s Residency Program in Social Medicine.
